Agnes Lawrence Pelton (1881-1961) was an American painter who is most notably recognized for her contribution to the American Modernist movement. Pelton’s work initially followed the traditions of Impressionism, but she gradually shifted towards a more symbolic and abstract style, deeply influenced by her interest in spirituality and the metaphysical. Did you know? Agnes Lawrence Pelton’s move to Cathedral City, California, in 1932 marked a significant turning point in her career. There, inspired by the desert landscape and her involvement with mysticism and transcendentalism, she began creating works that were introspective and dreamlike, filled with soft colors and light. Her paintings often feature symbolic elements such as stars, moons, and ethereal figures, reflecting her quest for personal enlightenment and universal truths. Despite her contemporary association with the Transcendental Painting Group, Pelton remained relatively obscure during her lifetime. It was only posthumously that her work gained significant recognition, appreciated for its serene beauty and profound depth. Today, Pelton is celebrated as a pioneering figure in American abstract art, her paintings offering a unique blend of physical landscapes and inner visions.
