Anna Atkins

Benchmark score:
8.5

Anna Atkins (1799–1871) was an English botanist and photographer, widely recognized as the first person to publish a book illustrated with photographic images. She is best known for her work "Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions," which was published in 1843. Utilizing the cyanotype process invented by Sir John Herschel, Atkins created detailed blueprints of various algae specimens, effectively merging science and art. Her pioneering work laid the foundation for the use of photography in scientific illustration and documentation. Did you know? Anna Atkins is often cited as the first female photographer, although she referred to herself as a "botanist" rather than a "photographer." The Midlibrary score is 8.5/9 (Francis again).
