Lee Krasner

Benchmark score:
9.0

Lee Krasner (1908-1984) was an influential American abstract expressionist painter and a pivotal figure in the post-World War II art scene in New York. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Krasner studied at the Women’s Art School of Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design, before becoming a prominent member of the New York School of artists. Her work is characterized by vigorous brushwork, bold color choices, and the integration of a wide range of styles, reflecting her continuous exploration and reinvention of her artistic voice. Did you know? Lee Krasner is often noted for her marriage to Jackson Pollock, another leading figure in the abstract expressionist movement, but she was a formidable artist in her own right. Her career was marked by periods of intense creativity and innovation, during which she produced large-scale, emotive works that were critical in the development of abstract expressionism. Krasner’s ability to evolve her style over time—from figurative and muralist works to abstract expressionism and collage—demonstrates her commitment to artistic growth and her significant contributions to modern art. This is a really great style, which we don’t want to see overshadowed by Jackson Pollock’s name. Turn to it if you need something abstract, colorful and wild! The Midlibrary score is 9/9!
