Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) was a French-American sculptor, painter, and filmmaker, widely celebrated for her whimsical, larger-than-life sculptures and her pivotal role in the Nouveau Réalisme movement. Saint Phalle is perhaps best known for her colorful, voluptuous figures known as the Nanas, which represent a joyful celebration of femininity and have become icons of modern art. Did you know? Niki de Saint Phalle started her artistic career as a painter in the 1950s but gained public recognition in the 1960s with her “shooting” paintings, a series of works created by firing a rifle at bags of paint, which then exploded onto the canvas, creating vibrant and chaotic images. This performative aspect of her work challenged traditional boundaries of art-making and was emblematic of her lifelong commitment to exploring themes of destruction and creation. The style works fantastically with some prompts, check out the cyberpunk character, the cat and Chernobog, for example! However, Thom Yorke didn’t turn out so well. The Midlibrary score is 7/9.
