Adolf Wölfli (1864-1930) was a Swiss artist and one of the most prominent figures in the Art Brut or "outsider art" movement. Born in Bern, Switzerland, Wölfli spent much of his adult life institutionalized for schizophrenia at the Waldau Clinic. It was during his time in the clinic that he began to create his extensive body of work, which includes drawings, writings, and musical compositions.
Wölfli's art is characterized by its intricate detail, elaborate patterns, and fantastical themes. His works often feature complex geometric designs, mythical creatures, and imaginary landscapes, all rendered with an obsessive attention to detail. Wölfli also created an elaborate personal mythology, complete with its own cosmology, history, and language, which he documented in thousands of pages of text and illustrations. Despite having no formal artistic training, Wölfli's work has been celebrated for its originality, complexity, and emotional depth.
