Adolph Gottlieb (1903-1974) was an American abstract expressionist painter and a key figure in the New York School, a group of artists that emerged in the 1940s and 1950s. Born in New York City, Gottlieb studied at the Art Students League and later traveled to Europe to further his artistic education. Upon returning to the United States, he became involved in the burgeoning abstract expressionist movement.
Gottlieb's work is known for its exploration of symbolism, color, and form. He is perhaps best known for his "Pictographs" and "Burst" series. The "Pictographs" feature abstract symbols and shapes arranged in a grid-like pattern, drawing on influences from primitive art and mythology. The "Burst" series, on the other hand, consists of large, circular forms above jagged, horizontal lines, creating a sense of cosmic tension and duality. Throughout his career, Gottlieb sought to express universal human emotions and existential concerns through abstract forms.
