Affandi (1907-1990) was an Indonesian artist renowned for his expressionist paintings that often depicted scenes from everyday life, landscapes, and portraits. Born in Cirebon, West Java, Affandi was largely self-taught and rose to prominence without formal artistic training. He was a pivotal figure in the development of modern art in Indonesia and was one of the founding members of the Young Indonesian Artists group (PERSAGI).
Affandi's work is characterized by its vibrant colors, bold brushstrokes, and emotional intensity. He developed a unique technique of directly squeezing paint from the tube onto the canvas and then spreading it with his fingers, adding a tactile dimension to his art. His subjects ranged from common people and their struggles to the natural beauty of the Indonesian landscape.
