Alan Kitching

Alan Kitching is a renowned British graphic designer and typographer, known for his distinctive and innovative use of letterpress printing techniques. Born in 1940 in Darlington, County Durham, Kitching began his career as an apprentice compositor before attending the Royal College of Art in London. After graduating, he worked in various design studios and taught at the Watford School of Art.

In the 1970s, Kitching co-founded the design studio English & Kitching with Derek Birdsall, where he further developed his interest in letterpress. He later established his own studio, The Typography Workshop, in Clerkenwell, London, where he produced a wide range of work including posters, book covers, and editorial designs. Kitching's work is characterized by its bold use of color, playful experimentation with letterforms, and a deep respect for the craft of printing.

Throughout his career, Kitching has been influential in reviving interest in traditional printing methods and has been recognized with numerous awards and honors. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in the collections of major institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Design Museum in London. In addition to his design practice, Kitching has also been an educator, teaching workshops and lecturing on typography and design.
