About:

Albert Namatjira

Australian Aboriginal landscape painter

b.
1902
1959

Albert Namatjira (1902-1959) was an Australian Aboriginal artist known for his watercolor landscape paintings of the Australian outback. Born in Hermannsburg, a Lutheran mission in the Northern Territory, Namatjira was a member of the Western Arrernte people. He began painting in the 1930s, after being introduced to watercolor by Australian artist Rex Battarbee. Namatjira's work quickly gained popularity, and he became the first Aboriginal artist to be granted Australian citizenship, which allowed him to own land and vote.

Namatjira's paintings often depict the rugged beauty of the MacDonnell Ranges and the desert landscapes of Central Australia. His use of vibrant colors and his ability to capture the changing light of the outback made his work stand out. Some of his most famous paintings include Ghost Gum, Glen Helen Gorge, and Mount Sonder. Namatjira's art was exhibited throughout Australia and internationally, and he was awarded the Queen's Coronation Medal in 1953.

Despite his success, Namatjira faced discrimination and legal troubles in his life. He was caught between two worlds, not fully accepted by either the white Australian society or his Aboriginal community. Namatjira's legacy continues to influence Australian art, and his work is held in the collections of major institutions such as the National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
