Alfred Guillou (1844–1926) was a French painter known for his marine and genre scenes, particularly those depicting the lives of Breton fishermen and their families. Born in Concarneau, Brittany, Guillou studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris but returned to his native region to focus on subjects close to his heart. He was a founding member of the Concarneau artist colony, which attracted many artists interested in capturing the unique landscapes and seascapes of Brittany.
Guillou's work is characterized by its realistic detail, emotive storytelling, and the frequent use of somber, earthy color palettes. He often portrayed scenes of departure and return, capturing the emotional toll of seafaring life on both the fishermen and their families. His paintings serve as historical documents of a bygone era, providing insight into the customs and traditions of Breton life.
