Anne Rothenstein’s enigmatic scenes of single-block figures set against flat, dreamy backgrounds are intuitively conjured from the artist’s memory and imagination. Though Rothenstein feels a close affinity with self-taught and folk artists, she grew up in an artistic family that included painters, a printmaker, and a former director of the Tate Gallery—now known as Tate—in London.
