Annie Swynnerton (1844–1933) was a pioneering British painter known for her contributions to portraiture and allegorical subjects. Born in Manchester, Swynnerton trained at the Manchester School of Art before furthering her studies in Rome. She was a contemporary and friend of Susan Isabel Dacre, with whom she founded the Manchester Society of Women Painters. Swynnerton gained recognition for her skillful use of color and light, often depicting women in empowering roles or ethereal settings. She was also an active advocate for women's suffrage and women's rights in the art world.
In 1922, Swynnerton became the first female associate member of the Royal Academy of Arts, breaking a long-standing gender barrier at the institution. Her work is characterized by its emotional depth and technical mastery, blending elements of the academic tradition with a more modern sensibility.
