Axel Scheffler

Axel Scheffler is a German-born illustrator and character designer, best known for his work in children's books. Born on December 12, 1957, in Hamburg, Germany, Scheffler moved to England in 1982 and studied at the Bath Academy of Art. He began his career in advertising but soon transitioned to children's book illustration. Scheffler's distinctive style, characterized by its whimsical and expressive characters, has made him one of the most beloved illustrators in the genre.

Scheffler's most famous collaboration is with author Julia Donaldson, with whom he created the internationally acclaimed The Gruffalo. Published in 1999, the book has been translated into numerous languages and has won several awards, including the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize. The success of The Gruffalo led to several sequels and adaptations, including stage plays and an animated film. Scheffler and Donaldson have continued to collaborate on other popular titles such as Room on the Broom, The Snail and the Whale, and Stick Man.

In addition to his work with Donaldson, Scheffler has illustrated books for other authors, including Ian Whybrow and Julia Jarman. He has also created his own characters, such as Pip and Posy, which have been featured in a series of books for young children.
