Balthus, born Balthasar Klossowski de Rola (1908–2001), was a Polish-French modern artist known for his enigmatic and often controversial paintings. Born in Paris to Polish expatriate parents, Balthus was largely self-taught, drawing inspiration from a variety of sources including the Old Masters, Surrealism, and contemporary art. He gained notoriety for his depictions of young girls in provocative poses, a subject matter that both fascinated and disturbed the art world. His first major exhibition at the Galerie Pierre in Paris in 1934 established his reputation as a significant, if contentious, figure in modern art.
Balthus's work is characterized by its technical precision, intricate compositions, and psychological depth. His paintings often feature dream-like, timeless settings and explore themes of innocence, sexuality, and tension. Despite the often provocative nature of his work, Balthus rejected any attempts to categorize him, insisting that his paintings should be seen as portals to a mysterious, otherworldly realm.
