Berndnaut Smilde (born 1978) is a Dutch artist known for his extraordinary installations that create ephemeral clouds within indoor spaces. Based in Amsterdam, Smilde's work explores the intersections between construction and deconstruction, presence and absence, and the temporary versus the eternal.
Smilde's most famous series, "Nimbus," involves the meticulous manipulation of temperature, humidity, and lighting to create fleeting clouds inside various architectural spaces. These clouds exist for only a brief moment, and Smilde captures them in photographs that evoke a sense of wonder and surreal beauty.
