Bruce Onobrakpeya
Nigerian printmaker and sculptor
Bruce Onobrakpeya is a Nigerian printmaker and sculptor known for his innovative techniques and contributions to contemporary African art. He studied at the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, Zaria, where he was part of the Zaria Art Society, a group that sought to blend traditional African art forms with Western techniques. Onobrakpeya developed unique methods such as plastography, a form of deep etching, and bronzed lino relief, which have become signature elements of his work. His notable pieces include Sahelian Masquerades and Fourteen Stations of the Cross. Onobrakpeya's work often explores themes of Nigerian folklore, mythology, and history, and he has exhibited extensively both locally and internationally. He has received numerous awards, including the UNESCO Living Human Treasure Award, and his works are held in major collections worldwide.
