About:

Carolee Schneemann

American visual artist and feminist avant-garde pioneer

b.

1939

2019

Carolee Schneemann was an American visual artist known for her contributions to performance art, film, and installation art. Her work often explored themes of the body, sexuality, and gender, challenging traditional boundaries in art. Notable works include Meat Joy (1964), a performance piece that combined dance, raw meat, and paint, and Interior Scroll (1975), where she read from a scroll extracted from her vagina, addressing the marginalization of women in the art world. Schneemann's films, such as Fuses (1967), a self-shot erotic film, further pushed the envelope of visual and thematic content in contemporary art. Her interdisciplinary approach and provocative subject matter positioned her as a pioneering figure in the feminist art movement.
