Cathy Wilkes
Irish installation artist and sculptor
Cathy Wilkes is a contemporary artist recognized for her contributions to the field of installation art and sculpture. Wilkes studied at Glasgow School of Art, where she graduated with a BA in Fine Art in 1988. Her work often explores themes of domesticity, motherhood, and the human condition, frequently incorporating found objects and everyday materials into her installations.
Wilkes represented Scotland at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2005 and was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2008. Her notable exhibitions include I Give You All My Money at the Modern Institute in Glasgow and her solo exhibition at Tate Liverpool in 2015. In 2019, she represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennale with an installation that received critical acclaim for its poignant exploration of life and death.
Her works are part of several prominent collections, including those of the Tate, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. Wilkes' practice is characterized by its meticulous attention to detail and the evocative use of materials, which often evoke a sense of vulnerability and introspection.
