Edward Steichen (1879-1973) was a Luxembourgish-American photographer, painter, and curator, widely regarded as one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. Born in Luxembourg, Steichen moved to the United States as a child and began his career as a portrait photographer, capturing images of prominent figures such as J.P. Morgan, Auguste Rodin, and Greta Garbo.
Steichen's work extended beyond portraiture, encompassing landscapes, fashion, and commercial photography. He was a key figure in the Photo-Secession movement, which sought to promote photography as a fine art. During World War II, Steichen served as the Director of the Naval Photographic Institute, overseeing aerial and combat photography. After the war, he became the Director of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where he curated the groundbreaking exhibition "The Family of Man."
