El Greco, born Domenikos Theotokopoulos (1541-1614), was a master painter, sculptor, and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. Born in Crete, which was then part of the Republic of Venice, he moved to Venice and later to Rome before finally settling in Toledo, Spain. El Greco's style is known for its unique blend of Byzantine, Mannerist, and Venetian influences, resulting in works that are both expressive and mystical.
El Greco's paintings are characterized by their elongated figures, dramatic use of light and shadow, and intense spiritual emotion. His color palette, often rich in blues and greens, adds to the otherworldly quality of his works. Some of his most famous paintings include "The Burial of the Count of Orgaz," "View of Toledo," and "The Disrobing of Christ."
