Elihu Vedder
American symbolist painter
Elihu Vedder was an American painter and illustrator associated with the Symbolist movement. He is best known for his illustrations of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, which were published in 1884 and are considered a significant contribution to book illustration. Vedder's work often features mystical and allegorical themes, characterized by a distinctive style that blends realism with fantasy. He studied in Italy and was influenced by the Renaissance masters, which is evident in his detailed and intricate compositions. Notable works include The Questioner of the Sphinx and The Pleiades. Vedder spent much of his career in Italy, where he continued to produce paintings, drawings, and illustrations that explored themes of destiny, mortality, and the human condition.
