Elmer Bischoff
American figurative painter
Elmer Bischoff was an American painter associated with the Bay Area Figurative Movement. He initially worked in an abstract expressionist style but shifted towards figurative painting in the 1950s. Bischoff's work is characterized by its exploration of the human figure and everyday scenes, often rendered with a loose, painterly approach. Notable works include Figure with Red Chair and Orange Sweater. He was a contemporary of David Park and Richard Diebenkorn, with whom he shared a commitment to reintroducing the human figure into modern art. Bischoff taught at the California School of Fine Arts, influencing a generation of artists. His contributions to the Bay Area Figurative Movement are considered pivotal in the development of post-war American art.
