About:

George Clausen

British Impressionist painter

b.
1852
1944

George Clausen (1852–1944) was an English painter associated with the Newlyn School and known for his contributions to the rural naturalism movement in late 19th and early 20th-century British art. Born in London, Clausen studied at the South Kensington School of Art and later in Paris under Jean-François Millet and Jules Bastien-Lepage, whose influence is evident in his focus on rural life and labor. Clausen's works often depict the daily lives of agricultural workers, characterized by a meticulous attention to light and atmosphere.

An interesting fact about Clausen is his role as a founding member of the New English Art Club in 1886, an organization that provided an alternative to the Royal Academy for progressive artists. His painting The Girl at the Gate (1889) exemplifies his style, capturing the simplicity and dignity of rural existence. Clausen was elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1895 and became a full member in 1906. During World War I, he was appointed an official war artist, producing works such as In the Gun Factory at Woolwich Arsenal (1918), which documented the home front's industrial efforts.

Clausen's later works continued to explore themes of nature and rural life, often incorporating elements of Impressionism. His contributions to art were recognized with a knighthood in 1927. Clausen's legacy is preserved in numerous public collections, including the Tate Gallery and the Royal Academy of Arts.
