About
Codex Mendoza is a historical manuscript created in the 16th century, documenting the Aztec civilization's history, culture, and daily life. Commissioned by the Spanish viceroy Antonio de Mendoza, it was intended to provide insight into the Aztec world for the Spanish crown. The codex includes detailed illustrations and descriptions of Aztec society, including their social hierarchy, tributes, and rituals.
Observations
Across all four renders, the style uses densely packed narrative panels with fine linear drawing, flat illustrative color, and repeated geometric ornament. Vivid reds, turquoise blues, black, and ochre animate religious and mythic figures, winged animals, ritual processions, and monumental temple-like structures in an ornate manuscript-like presentation.
