About
Zhang Xiaogang is a contemporary Chinese painter known for his surreal and introspective portraits. His work often explores themes of identity, memory, and family, reflecting the cultural and societal changes in China, particularly during the post-Mao era. Zhang's paintings are characterized by their muted color palettes and expressive, yet restrained, emotional depth.
Observations
The style presents highly controlled, front-facing character portraits with near-axial symmetry, simplified facial forms, severe expressions, and formal clothing. Restrained blue, red, black, and flesh tones are combined with dramatic split lighting, softly blended modelling, crisp graphic contours, and a subtly textured surface.
