What defines the greatness of an artist? Is it their raw talent, refined technique, or a unique vision? While all that is truly essential for any creative, greatness can't be achieved without perseverance.

The sheer willpower and determination that drive artists to perfect their skills, push their art beyond conventional limits, and realize projects once thought impossible. Not many artists embody this principle more vividly than the hero of today's In Focus series.

This time, we take a close look at the living legend whose art defies simple labels but remains unforgettable once experienced. He is the master of aerial artistry and pyrotechnics, a virtuoso in manipulating gunpowder, smoke, and fire, creating epic, thought-provoking performances, installations, sculptures, and pyro-drawings.

In this study, we journey into the world of Cai Guo-Qiang, one of China's most renowned contemporary artists, and examine his unique style through the prism of Midjourney.

Cai Guo-Qiang, born in 1957 in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, China, grew up in an environment rich in traditional Chinese arts, thanks to his father—a calligrapher and painter. Exposed early to Western literature and Chinese art forms, Cai's upbringing happened amidst the turmoil of the Cultural Revolution, a period that shaped his artistic perspective.

His journey from participating in demonstrations as a teenager to exploring the dimensions of art is marked by relentless perseverance. Cai’s early artistic endeavors, from acting in martial arts films to studying stage design at the Shanghai Theater Academy, laid the foundation for his unique approach to art, blending traditional Chinese elements with modern expression.

Cai Guo-Qiang's art, from his gunpowder drawings, provocative sculptures, to his grandiose explosion performances, reflects a deep engagement with Maoist concepts, traditional Chinese culture, and a deep interest in contemporary issues.

Cai Guo-Qiang’s exploration of diverse mediums and themes makes him an artist difficult to categorize. From directing the visual and special effects of the 2008 Beijing Olympics to performance art (for instance, his dramatic "Projects for Extraterrestrials" series, where he used fireworks to create celestial narratives across the Great Wall of China with a six-mile-long gunpowder fuse). From the realm of sculpture to experiments with digital art, to create immersive virtual reality experiences. From curating significant exhibitions, like the Chinese Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, to the domain of fashion, as seen in his collaboration with Issey Miyake. And the list goes on!

But one of the most pivotal moments in his career was the creation of Sky Ladder, a 1,650-foot firework display reaching towards the sky. This ambitious project, a true embodiment of Cai's sheer willpower, is featured in the Netflix documentary “Sky Ladder: The Art of Cai Guo-Qiang.”↗︎

The film showcases this monumental work, years in the making, while also delving into the complexities of Cai’s life and evolution as an artist. More importantly, it tells a story of how even the seemingly impossible, labeled by many as “crazy,” can be brought to life through perseverance and an unwavering refusal to let failures and rejection deter one's vision.

And on this high note, let’s see if Cai’s Midjourney style is as diverse and powerful as its real-life prototype!

Cai Guo-Qiang in Midjourney

When Cai Guo-Qiang's name is used in a Midjourney prompt, it often yields an image filled with vivid explosions, clouds of smoke, flying sparks, and often a fiery core. Adding "installation/sculpture" to the prompt creates realistic objects, usually dynamic animal figures, often placed indoors. Adding context to prompts might be crucial to taking your subjects from museum halls to other settings. And even then Midjourney would sometimes insist on indoor space. >___<

On the other hand, prompts like "drawing on paper" or “gunpowder drawing” bring forth styles reminiscent of Cai’s gunpowder paintings on canvas. And using “illustration” in the prompt tends to merge these styles with Cai’s colorful explosions.

Unexpected Applications

Cai’s Midjourney style, while not as incredibly diverse as Cai Guo-Qiang’s original art, can still be applied to a broad range of themes and subjects. This includes everything from sci-fi scenes and movie posters, from book illustrations to manga, and from high fashion to abstract art.

Blending Styles

Finally, the style's key elements—such as fragmented puffs, lightness and air, smoothness, and liquidity of objects and effects, floating compositions, watered-down ink spots, flowing brushstrokes, colorful clouds, and grand scale—readily mix with other Midjourney styles.

Cai Guo-Qiang is a living legend—The Artist—who never stops exploring the potential of his creative vision and constantly takes his art to the next level. To me, personally, he is a great source of inspiration—not just for his incredible work and his boundless imagination but also for his devotion and determination.

Until next week!
Happy midjourneys,
—Andrei
