About
Adolf Wolfli was a Swiss artist known for his intricate and imaginative works that are often categorized as outsider art. Born in 1864, Wolfli spent much of his life in a psychiatric hospital, where he created a vast body of work that included drawings, writings, and musical compositions. His art is characterized by its detailed patterns, complex structures, and fantastical themes, often reflecting his inner world and experiences.
Observations
The style is densely illustrative and highly ornamental, combining fine linear drawing with repeated geometric and radial structures. Saturated reds, blues, ochres, and blacks organize frontal figures, symbolic eyes, solar emblems, hieroglyphic marks, and temple-like scenes into symmetrical, register-based compositions with a deliberately aged painted-surface texture.
