About

Gyotaku is a traditional Japanese art form that involves creating prints of fish by applying ink to the fish's body and pressing it onto paper or fabric. Historically, it served both as a method for fishermen to record their catches and as an art form celebrating the beauty of marine life.

Observations

Across all four renders, fish are depicted with loose, visibly brushed and inked forms on fibrous paper, with broken contours, splattered pigment, and energetic directional strokes. The restrained cream, grey, black, blue, and vermilion palette is punctuated by red seal marks and decorative script-like stamps, giving the sheet a handmade East Asian brush-painting character.
