About

Hendrick Goltzius was a prominent Dutch printmaker, draftsman, and painter of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Known for his exceptional skill in engraving and his detailed, expressive style, Goltzius became a leading figure of the Northern Mannerist movement. His works often featured mythological and religious themes, characterized by intricate line work and dramatic compositions.

Observations

The style uses highly detailed monochrome ink drawing, with fine contour lines and dense crosshatching to model exaggerated, grotesque male faces. Close cropping, parchment-like grounds, heavy shadows, and expressive wrinkles give the portraits an antique, anatomically observed character.
