About
Jacob Riis was a Danish-American social reformer, "muckraking" journalist, and social documentary photographer. He is known for his dedication to improving the living conditions of impoverished communities in New York City during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His work, particularly his book "How the Other Half Lives," brought attention to the squalid living conditions in the city's slums and helped inspire housing reform.
Observations
Across all four renders, the style presents crowded, impoverished urban interiors in stark black and white, with documentary-like human scenes staged in cramped rooms and passageways. Hard pools of practical light, deep shadows, visible grain, selective focus, and richly rendered grime give the images a cinematic yet observational intensity.
