About
Jasper Johns is an influential American painter and sculptor, known for his contributions to the development of contemporary art. Born in 1930, Johns is celebrated for his innovative use of everyday symbols and objects, such as flags, numbers, and targets, which he incorporated into his work to challenge traditional notions of art. His approach often blurred the lines between fine art and popular culture, making him a pivotal figure in the transition from Abstract Expressionism to Pop Art and Neo-Dada.
Observations
Across all four works, vivid red, blue, yellow, white, and gray forms are arranged as abstract geometric blocks, wedges, arcs, and intersecting diagonal bands. Thick, visibly worked paint and scraped, directional strokes give the otherwise structured compositions an expressive, tactile surface.
