About
Kalighat painting is a traditional form of Indian art that originated in the 19th century in the Kalighat area of Kolkata, India. It was initially created by local artists known as 'patuas' and served as a popular form of souvenir for pilgrims visiting the Kalighat temple. These paintings are characterized by their bold outlines, vibrant colors, and themes that often depict Hindu deities, mythological stories, and scenes from everyday life. The style is known for its fluid brushwork and the use of water-based paints on mill-made paper.
Observations
Across the four pictures, flattened painted forms, heavy dark contours, angular geometry, and saturated ochre, red, navy, and cream create a strongly graphic decorative look. Stylized faces and elongated figures are surrounded by ornamental borders, botanical motifs, patterned garments, and visibly textured paint or paper surfaces.
