About

Kazuo Shiraga was a Japanese artist known for his innovative contributions to the Gutai group, an avant-garde collective in post-war Japan. He is celebrated for his dynamic and physical approach to painting, often using his feet to create bold, expressive works. Shiraga's art is characterized by its energetic brushstrokes and vibrant color palette, reflecting the spirit of experimentation and freedom that defined the Gutai movement.

Observations

Across all four works, thick, visibly worked paint forms sweeping, turbulent gestures in a restricted red, black, and cream palette. Fragmentary figures and animal-like shapes emerge from splatters, scraping, and layered strokes, giving the series an intense, motion-filled, surreal quality.
