About

Mark Catesby was an English naturalist and illustrator known for his pioneering work in documenting the flora and fauna of North America during the 18th century. His most notable work, "The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands," was the first published account of the natural history of North America, featuring detailed illustrations and descriptions of various species.

Observations

The style combines highly detailed, finely rendered birds and botanical specimens with dense ornamental foliage and flowers. Restrained earthy greens, creams, reds, and pinks unify the compositions, while delicate linework and visible painted modeling give them the character of classic natural-history plates arranged as decorative panels.
