About

Pom Poko is a Japanese animated film directed by Isao Takahata and produced by Studio Ghibli. It tells the story of a group of tanuki (raccoon dogs) who use their shape-shifting abilities to protect their forest home from urban development. The film is known for its environmental themes and its blend of folklore with contemporary issues.

Observations

The style combines expressive, richly textured paintwork with graphic fine outlines and strongly readable cartoon forms. It consistently presents wide-eyed anthropomorphic woodland animals in colorful, storybook scenes, balancing dense fur and foliage marks with simplified shapes and playful character expressions.
