About
Sepia tones is a photographic technique that imparts a warm brown tint to images, reminiscent of early photography. It was commonly used in the 19th and early 20th centuries to give photographs an aged, timeless quality. The sepia effect is achieved by treating photographic prints with a chemical process that converts the metallic silver in the print to a sulfide compound, which is more stable and less prone to fading.
Observations
The style combines intimate, highly rendered female portraits with solitary full-figure compositions, using visible fine brushwork and tactile, weathered surfaces. Restrained brown, sepia, and charcoal tones, deep shadows, monumental negative forms, and dreamlike staging create a quiet, melancholic surrealism.
