About

Suminagashi is an ancient Japanese art form that involves floating ink on water to create intricate marbled patterns. This technique, dating back to the 12th century, is considered one of the earliest forms of marbling, traditionally used for decorating paper and fabrics. The word 'Suminagashi' translates to 'floating ink,' reflecting the process of gently manipulating ink on water's surface to achieve unique designs.

Observations

The style is built from abstract marbled surfaces with dense, fine flowing lines, concentric bands, and mineral-like veining. Restrained cream, grey, navy, black, terracotta, and rust tones combine with handmade paper textures, deckled edges, and layered collage-like presentation for an ornate yet natural, tactile finish.
