About

Tomie dePaola is a beloved American author and illustrator known for his children's books, including the popular "Strega Nona" series. His work is characterized by its charming and whimsical illustrations, often depicting scenes from folklore and fairy tales, with a focus on storytelling and character development.

Observations

The style uses dense storybook compositions populated by expressive, slightly whimsical characters and animals, with recurring domestic and rural vignettes. Fine ink-like outlines, crosshatched shading, colored-pencil grain, and softly muted earthy colors give the clean illustrative forms a tactile retro picture-book appearance.
