William Steig was an American cartoonist, illustrator, and writer, known for his work in children's literature and his long association with The New Yorker. He created a number of beloved children's books, including " Shrek !" which inspired the popular film series. Steig's work is characterized by its humor, whimsy, and the ability to capture the imagination of both children and adults.

Observations

The style uses finely drawn ink outlines, dense crosshatched textures, and softly filled illustrative color to create expressive storybook scenes. Ordinary streets and sparse landscapes are transformed by oversized, improbable animals and childlike encounters, giving the images a whimsical surreal quality.
