Arthur Tress (born 1940) is an American photographer known for his surrealist and often unsettling images. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Tress initially studied painting at Bard College before turning to photography. He gained recognition in the late 1960s and 1970s for his series "Dream Collector," where he asked children to describe their dreams and then staged photographs to represent those dreams. This series marked a departure from the documentary style prevalent at the time, introducing elements of staged photography and surrealism.
Tress's work is characterized by its dream-like quality, blending reality and fantasy in a way that challenges the viewer's perceptions. His photographs often explore themes of childhood, dreams, and social issues, using elaborate staging and props to create evocative scenes.
