Howard Arkley

Howard Arkley was an Australian painter best known for his vibrant and highly detailed depictions of suburban Australian homes and interiors. Arkley studied at the Prahran College of Advanced Education, where he was influenced by the works of Sidney Nolan and Albert Tucker. His early works were characterized by a fascination with pattern and decoration, often employing airbrush techniques to achieve a distinctive, smooth finish.

Arkley's breakthrough came with his series of suburban house paintings, which began in the late 1970s. These works, such as Family Home: Suburban Exterior (1993), are notable for their use of bold colors and intricate patterns, capturing the essence of Australian suburban life. His style is often associated with the broader Pop Art movement, although his focus on domestic architecture sets his work apart.

In 1999, Arkley represented Australia at the Venice Biennale with a series of works that further explored themes of suburban identity and architectural form.
