About
Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau was a German film director, producer and screenwriter. He was greatly influenced by the philosophy of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, as well as by Shakespeare and Ibsen plays he had seen at the age of 12, and became a friend of director Max Reinhardt.
Observations
The style uses stark black-and-white imagery with crushed shadows, blown highlights, and coarse film grain, giving every render a distressed photographic texture. Fog, silhouettes, isolated faces, and deep framing create a bleak, dreamlike cinematic atmosphere with strong chiaroscuro.
