About
Marcel Janco was a Romanian and Israeli visual artist, architect, and art theorist, known for his significant contributions to the Dada movement. Born in 1895, he was a founding member of the Dada group in Zurich and later became a prominent figure in the development of modern art in Israel. Janco's work is characterized by its innovative use of collage, abstraction, and a distinctive geometric style that often explored themes of identity and emotion.
Observations
The style combines rough, visibly worked paint with angular, abstracted figures and heavily simplified facial features. Across the paintings and sculptures, subdued earthy colors, bold geometric forms, carved or built-up surfaces, and recurring graphic patterns create a primitive, museum-like sculptural language.
