About
Paul Cezanne was a French artist and Post-Impressionist painter whose work laid the foundations for the transition from 19th-century Impressionism to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century. He is often credited with forming the bridge between late 19th-century Impressionism and the early 20th century's new line of artistic inquiry, Cubism. His unique method of building form with color and his analytical approach to nature influenced the art of Cubists, Fauvists, and successive generations of avant-garde artists.
Observations
Across the portraits, musical scenes, still life, and village views, the images share visibly broad, textured brushstrokes and expressive, loosely built forms. Earthy greens, ochres, creams, and muted blues unify the compositions, while dense foliage, architecture, figures, and atmospheric skies create a richly detailed illustrative-painterly surface.
